Best Time To Book International Airfare

When is the best time to buy an international trip ticket? That depends. Booking too early can be expensive, and booking at the last minute can also be costly. Booking international travel around 60 days out seems to be the ideal window.

If you have your sights set on a destination for next year’s vacation, start to track prices for that season. Use flight price aggregators like Google Flights or Hopper to see patterns of price fluctuations.

Naturally, you will pay the max over peak holidays and in summer. If you plan to redeem airline and/or loyalty points, mark your calendars to save your seat as far in advance as possible.

Most major airlines release flights for booking between 330 and 361 days in advance. However, the exact number of days depends on the airline:

  • American: 331 days out
  • Delta Air Lines: 331 days
  • United Airlines: 337
  • Southwest: 8 months, or 250 days
  • Air Canada: 354 days ahead
  • Alaska Airlines: 330 days
  • Allegiant Air: 6-9 months
  • Avelo Airlines: 4-5 months out
  • Breeze Airways: 7 months
  • JetBlue: 331 days
  • Spirit: 330
  • British Airways: 355 days
  • Cathay Pacific: 360 days
