Clark’s Updated Way To Shop for Car Rental Deals – Technologist

One major way to reduce your travel costs is to look for ways to save on your car rental expenses. That’s what money expert Clark Howard has done time and time again.

Clark says he’s recently put into practice a new strategy to get car rental deals when he travels — and the deals have been rolling.

In this article, we’ll cover Clark’s updated way to shop for car rental deals and how you can save in the process.

What Online Tools Does Clark Use To Shop for Car Rental Deals?

Clark and Team Clark have been big fans of AutoSlash, which sends you the rates on different car rentals for the times you select. Our AutoSlash review walks you through how to use the website — but Clark has updated his car rental shopping toolbox.

“I don’t use AutoSlash anymore,” Clark says, ” and it used to be a common tool I used because they would automatically rebook the rate when a lower rate came and stuff like that, but I just haven’t found it to be effective in recent times.”

Will Clark come back to Team AutoSlash anytime soon? Only time — and a good deal — will tell, but in the meantime, here are two car rental shopping tools he’s sold on right now.

1. RentalCars.com

RentalCars.com is a travel website that is a part of the Booking.com empire that owns Priceline, Kayak, OpenTable and more.

Some features of RentalCars.com include:

  • Ability to book for free (a must).
  • In partnership with big brands like Hertz, Sixt, Dollar, and Thrifty.
  • Ability to modify or cancel booking up to 48 hours before reservation.

Clark says he likes RentalCars.com because it allows him to see different car rental rates quickly so that he can compare them. But that’s just the first step.

“I go to Rentalcars.com and I survey the market,” he says. Then I go to Costco Travel.”

2. Costco Travel

You may already know that Clark is a huge fan of Costco, so the same good prices that members enjoy in the warehouse can also be found on Costco Travel.

“I’d say almost 100% of the time I get my cheapest rental through Costco Travel,” Clark says.

Some key features of Costco Travel include:

  • No cancellation fees.
  • Ability to book for free.
  • Selection of vehicles from big brands like Hertz, Sixt, Dollar, Thrifty.
  • Added coupons toward car rental base rates.

“And the other thing you get with Costco Travel is that your spouse or one other driver is able to drive without an additional daily driver fee. And so it’s been a really great source for Costco members to save a lot of money on rental cars.”

Final Thoughts

No matter what online travel tool you use to shop for rental cars, Clark wants you to always book for free and far enough in advance so that you can re-shop your rates as your travel dates get nearer.
